April offered three different routes toward business AI: openly available model weights, a compact model release and a managed enterprise assistant reaching general availability. For a business owner, the growing choice was useful only if it could be translated into a decision about a real task. Some organizations needed a dependable knowledge interface; others wanted to explore a narrow application or retain more control over deployment. This edition looks at those options without assuming that the newest model is automatically the best choice or that infrastructure control comes without a maintenance burden.
1. Llama 3 expands the model deployment conversation
Meta released Llama 3 in 8-billion- and 70-billion-parameter versions on April 18, including pretrained and instruction-tuned models. The release focused on text capabilities. Additional capabilities described as future work should not be read back into the April release. The weights were made available under Meta’s terms, which is different from saying that all uses were unrestricted or that no license review was necessary.
For a business considering its own application, accessible model weights can widen the range of deployment choices. That may be relevant where the organization wants particular control over the runtime or needs to compare models on an internal task. But a model that can be downloaded still needs an application, access controls and an operating owner. Compare a realistic workload across available options, including setup effort and staff time. A smaller model that performs a bounded task adequately may be preferable to a larger system that is costly to operate and difficult to maintain.
Business takeaway: treat model access as an option, not a finished solution. Review the license, test representative work and identify who will maintain the deployment before making it an operational dependency.

2. Phi-3 mini makes narrow-model experiments more concrete
Microsoft introduced Phi-3 mini on April 23. The 3.8-billion-parameter, instruction-tuned model was made available through channels including Azure AI Studio, Hugging Face and Ollama. The announcement discussed both its capabilities and limitations, including the constraints of a smaller model’s factual knowledge. Other members of the family were described as forthcoming, rather than all being part of the initial release.
This suggested a useful experiment for businesses with a repetitive, limited task. Instead of asking a compact model to act as a universal expert, evaluate whether it can classify a request, rewrite approved material or extract a small set of fields for review. Build a test set that includes unusual vocabulary and inputs that should be rejected. If local deployment is being considered, verify the complete data path. Running a model on a device does not automatically establish that every surrounding component is private, secure or adequately supported.
Business takeaway: narrow the job and define the limits. Smaller models are worth evaluating when their capabilities fit the task, but deployment location and parameter count alone do not establish business suitability.

3. Amazon Q Business reaches general availability
AWS announced the general availability of Amazon Q Business on April 30, while Amazon Q Apps was introduced in preview. The distinction is important: a generally available assistant and a preview application-building feature had different readiness states. The announcement emphasized enterprise information connections, identity integration and permission-aware assistance, with more than 40 connectors described.
For an organization whose main problem is finding current procedures, a managed knowledge assistant may be a more direct route than building a model deployment. The preparation work still matters. Select a small set of authoritative documents, identify their owners and remove obsolete copies from the pilot’s sources. Test with users who have different access rights. Ask questions that require an exception or a recent policy change, not only questions that appear verbatim in a document heading. Record whether the answer identifies its evidence and whether the employee can act on it safely.
Business takeaway: connect the knowledge that has been maintained, not every available folder at once. Evaluate Q Business and the separate Q Apps preview according to their actual April availability and the workflow each would support.
A decision worth documenting
Write down why the project needs a particular approach: managed assistant, hosted model API or a more directly controlled deployment. Include data requirements, expected volume, support responsibility and an exit plan. That record makes it easier to judge later changes without restarting the discussion from the latest product announcement.
