September 2025: AI moves deeper into working documents

Office agents, Claude Sonnet 4.5, and ChatGPT Pulse explored new ways to prepare and improve business work.

September's announcements concentrated on work products and initiative. Assistants could help build documents and spreadsheets, coding tools added recovery controls, and a preview offered proactive research updates. The opportunity was more than faster drafting: it was a shorter path from raw information to a decision-ready result. The corresponding test was whether the output could be inspected, corrected, and maintained by the people responsible for using it.

1. Office agent features enter early access

Microsoft announced Agent Mode in Excel and Word and Office Agent on September 29. The launch used its Frontier early-access program, with plan, platform, language, and market restrictions. Excel and Word experiences began on the web, while Office Agent initially targeted eligible personal subscribers in the United States. The announcement should not be read as general access to every feature across every Microsoft 365 workplace.

For leaders, the appealing part was working directly with editable business artifacts rather than receiving instructions to recreate them manually. A spreadsheet or presentation can become a useful first draft. It still needs review of assumptions, calculations, and audience fit. For a monthly operating report, insist that the figures reconcile with the source and that a reader can distinguish actuals from forecasts. An attractive chart does not compensate for a misunderstood definition or an incorrect formula.

Business takeaway: Evaluate an early-access feature on a copy of a familiar report. Check formulas, totals, source periods, and editability before adopting it for recurring management reporting.

2. Sonnet 4.5 pairs coding advances with recovery tools

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 4.5 on September 29 alongside product updates including Claude Code checkpoints and the Claude Agent SDK. Checkpoints allowed progress to be saved and earlier states restored. The announcement also described code execution and file creation in Claude's apps. Claims of superior coding performance remained vendor claims to test against an organization's own requirements.

The checkpoint feature highlighted something practical about AI-assisted software work: useful progress is rarely a perfectly straight line. A tool that can make changes also needs a way to recover when the proposed direction is wrong. For a business application, the evaluation should include the quality of the rollback and the review record, not only the speed of generation. The same principle applies to documents: preserve the original, make the changes visible, and ensure the owner can understand what was altered.

Business takeaway: Include reversibility in the acceptance criteria for an AI coding workflow. Verify that reviewers can inspect changes and recover a known-good state before expanding its scope.

3. Pulse explores proactive research

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Pulse on September 25 as a preview for Pro users on mobile. Instead of waiting for each question, it could perform research and present personalized updates based on prior interactions, feedback, and connected context. The launch described a preview that would improve through use, with broader availability still a goal.

For a business owner, proactive information can be useful if it supports a specific recurring decision. A briefing on a defined market or an upcoming meeting is more actionable than an unlimited stream of interesting developments. The risk is spending time reviewing material that is loosely related to the business. A sensible trial would specify a narrow subject and a desired action, then track which updates actually changed preparation or decision-making. Proactive research is not the same as approval to contact customers or make operational changes.

Business takeaway: Test a focused briefing topic and record whether each update is useful, redundant, or unsupported. Keep research suggestions separate from permission to act on the business.

September's business case was stronger when it included the life of the work after generation. Can another person edit the file, check the numbers, or reverse a change? Does a briefing lead to a useful decision? Those questions keep the focus on operating value rather than the novelty of an assistant working without a fresh prompt.
