October 2025: Package AI around how your business works

ChatGPT apps, Agent Skills, and multi-step Sheets editing connected AI capabilities with repeatable business tasks.

October brought more ways to place AI inside an existing workflow. Conversational apps offered a new interface to services, reusable skills packaged instructions and resources, and spreadsheet assistance expanded into multi-step edits. For a business owner, these developments suggested opportunities to reduce repeated explanation and manual handoffs. They also made it more important to define permissions, ownership, and what a completed task should look like before connecting powerful tools.

1. ChatGPT apps create a conversational entry point

OpenAI introduced apps in ChatGPT and a preview Apps SDK on October 6. Initial apps were available on specified consumer plans and in supported markets outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The SDK let developers build interactive experiences connected to their own services. The source's later November expansion to business plans is outside this edition's period.

The business opportunity was a new way for customers to explore a service or complete a task within conversation. That is an interface opportunity, not automatic distribution or guaranteed demand. A useful app still needs a clear problem, a dependable backend, and a sensible reason for a user to connect an account. A company evaluating the SDK could prototype a narrow experience, such as selecting an appropriate service or preparing a structured request, before investing in a wider product. Privacy and permission descriptions belong in that initial design.

Business takeaway: Test one customer task with a clear success condition. Validate the interaction and backend requirements before treating a conversational app as a new acquisition or sales channel.

2. Agent Skills package repeatable expertise

Anthropic described Agent Skills on October 16 as folders containing instructions, scripts, and resources that an agent could discover and load when relevant. The idea was to package domain-specific expertise so a general assistant could follow a more specialized process. It offered a concrete mechanism for reusing work instructions rather than repeating them in every conversation.

For a business, this could support a consistent report format, a defined review sequence, or a procedure for preparing a proposal. The important word is consistent, not automatic. A packaged instruction can preserve a mistake just as easily as a good practice. It needs an owner, a version, and examples of acceptable results. Scripts and included resources also need review before they run with access to company systems. The useful implementation begins with a documented process that already has a clear purpose.

Business takeaway: Choose one recurring deliverable and document its inputs, steps, quality checks, and approval point. Test the packaged skill against ordinary cases and exceptions before sharing it widely.

3. Sheets handles compound editing requests

Google announced on October 16 that Gemini in Sheets could execute multiple editing actions from a single prompt, with an expanded range of supported tasks. Examples included formatting, data cleaning, structural changes, filters, and pivot tables. The announcement described a rollout for eligible users; access still depended on the applicable plan and settings.

A business analyst could describe a desired cleanup in one request rather than issue a separate instruction for every operation. That can be useful when preparing a recurring report, but a compound request also makes it easier to overlook an unintended change. Renaming categories, sorting rows, and inserting formulas can affect the meaning of a dataset. A sensible trial uses a copy, checks row counts and totals, and examines the specific transformations. The goal is a cleaner, trustworthy workbook rather than simply fewer clicks.

Business takeaway: Test a multi-step cleanup on a duplicate workbook. Reconcile record counts, totals, category changes, and formulas before replacing the original or using the result in a business decision.

October's useful theme was reusable business knowledge. A conversational interface, a packaged procedure, and a spreadsheet workflow can all reduce repetitive effort when the underlying process is sound. Define the process and its acceptance checks first. That makes it easier to decide where standard tools are sufficient and where custom software would create a more dependable result.
